Hugo Chavez, South America’s answer to Mussolini, has got another headline grabbing stunt up his sleeve. Chavez has announced that he plans to seek extradition of “Reverend” Pat Robertson. The host of TV’s 700 Club sparked ire in Caracas when he called upon the US government to assassinate Chavez. Chavez has called Robertson’s actions criminal and hence Chavez’s desire to extradite Roberston. Now there is no doubt that Robertson’s statement was clearly wrong. Even the Phalanx has never called for Chavez’s death. Afterall, Chavez isn’t a terrorist and thus far hasn’t taking any action to threaten the United States. Though our contempt for Chavez is total, that contempt is rooted in his words and tyrannical politics. Calling for the murder of a foreign leader who’s greatest offense is nonsensical rhetoric is going to far, especially for a supposed man of the cloth. Indeed, Robertson and Chavez have a lot in common, they have both flown off the handle on more than one occasion. Chavez, however, is having delusions of grandeur if he believes the US is going to extradite an American citizen over protected speech. Chavez, long accustomed to being obeyed is clearly ignorant of the concept of democracy and individual liberty if he feels that foreigners can be arrested at a whim, on his say so. For those who haven’t been keeping score, Chavez is quite adept at drawing attention away from his tyrannical regime, and focusing attention on external threats, thus temporarily distracting his people from the reality of home life. It just so happens that in this case, Chavez had a willing accomplice in the off the cuff remarks made by Robertson. Chavez, however, can’t go too long focused in a single distraction. This simply wouldn’t fool his people for long, thus Chavez, must continually invent new distractions to thrust upon his people. We at The Phalanx will keep you abreast of the latest in Chavez diatribes, as they happen.
