From the moment president Bush choose Harriet Miers as his choice to replace the retiring Sandra Day O’Connor, there has been a constant stream of opposition coming from the right. Conservatives have levied an assortment of complaints on the White House Counsel and Supreme Court nominee. Some have argued that she lacks the intellectual fortitude, not being from an Ivy League school, which is nonsense of the highest caliber. Some say she lacks judicial experience, which is irrelevant considering nearly half of all justices weren’t judges prior to their stint on the court. Some have argued that she is too much of an unknown and may not be a reliable conservative, this is perhaps the only legitimate argument. What is interesting, however, is the fact that more criticism seems to be coming from the right than from the left. Indeed, some of Bush’s biggest critics among the left, like Harry Reid have had nothing but praise for Miers, while Bush’s chief allies on the right have had the most stinging criticisms. Democrats have always been happy to sit back and let the opposition tear at each other, but is that what is really happening? Could all this criticism among Republicans be an elaborate ruse, to ensure Miers’ confirmation? After all, if Miers angers Republicans this much, Democrats could figure that by supporting her they could end up with another David Souter or John Paul Stevens. Time will certainly tell if that is the case. Even Souter voted conservative for a few years before his true colors began to shine through.
