Remember Louis Freeh? He was appointed by Bill Clinton in 1993 to serve as director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He served until 2001, when Bush replaced Clinton as president. Freeh has just released a book entitled “My FBI,” discussing his tenure as director of the FBI during the Clinton era. Freeh’s book was highly critical of the former president, arguing that Clinton took a cavalier attitude when it came to criminal investigations, even with regard to terrorism. Freeh has also argued that Clinton had so many problems during his tenure because he had so many skeletons in his closet. Apparently during his reign as FBI director, relations with the Clinton White House were severely strained and Freeh was not popular among the Clinton staff. Naturally, Freeh couldn’t expect to write a scathing book about the darling of the Democratic Party and not expect retaliation. The Clinton camp has already fired back at Freeh. Freeh’s critics call his book a work of fiction and an attempt by Freeh simply to sell books. Clinton’s camp even likens Freeh to a lap dog for the Republicans, well, if he is a GOP tool, who was it that appointed him in the first place? Well its obvious that Freeh’s book is an attempt to sell books, most authors aren’t in the business to not sell books, but is it fiction. Can anyone say with a straight face that the Clinton administration was NOT wrought with scandal? Freeh called Clinton’s frequent scandals a constant distraction to the important work of the FBI and even recounted how he had to turn to former President Bush to help push the Saudis with an investigation into a terror bombing at the Khobar Towers. With out question Freeh is correct in that Clinton’s scandals were a distraction, but Freeh cannot be absolved of all blame for failure during the Clinton years, but there is enough blame to go around from Clinton to Janet Reno to the State Department and so on.
