Last week, President Bush gave a major policy speech on Iraq. According to the president, Iraq is one of many fronts in the war on terror. He argued that the terrorists are simply using Iraq as an excuse to justify mass murder on an even larger scale and in this sense he is right. Whether or not one agrees with the Iraq war itself, only the most blind can argue that Iraq has created the current terror threat in this (or any) country. To accept the premise that Iraq is the key basis for terrorist actions today is to ignore over 50 years of history. We at The Phalanx have repeatedly pointed out the numerous terror actions that have occurred around the world at the hand of Islamic extremists. It seems the modern Democratic Party has done just that. Democrats and their leftist allies (both at home and abroad) argue that Bush’s war in Iraq created the current terror threat, suggesting that we would be living in complete peace and harmony if there had never been an Iraq war. Democrats seemed to have forgotten the numerous terror attacks that occurred during Clinton’s term as president, many also seem to have forgotten their own rhetoric calling for action against Saddam Hussein’s Iraq. The Democrats also pointed out that Bush’s speech lacked specifics and win and how US troops would be withdrawn from Iraq. In a sense, the leftists are right. It is high time that Iraqis take more responsibility for their personal security. It is certainly in America's best interest to limit our involvement (and dependency) on the Middle East.
