Frequent visitors are no doubt surprised by today’s headline, but your eyes do not deceive you. So what is Senator Clinton correct about? She is correct about South Korean sentiment vis-à-vis the United States. Senator Clinton made her comments during a confirmation hearing for Gen. Burwell B. Bell who has been nominated as commander of U.S. Forces Korea. According to the senator, South Korea is undergoing “historical amnesia,” forgetting the role the US has played in securing their safety and freedom from communist aggression for over 50 years, not to mention the major part the US has played in the economic miracle that is South Korea. And the senator is correct that the leadership in South Korea has fanned the flames of Anti-Americanism, a popular strategy for leftist politicians. There is even a movement afoot to remove a statue of Gen. Douglas MacArthur, the savior of the south during the Korean War. We should not, however, be surprised by this turn of events, our sacrifices have been all but forgotten elsewhere in the world, why not Korea? Now the south’s leaders seek to drive a deeper wedge in the US-Korean relationship. Given this turn of events, one has to ask, why are we spending billions each year and committing tens of thousands of troops in defense of a country that increasingly denigrates us in word and in deed? America should call it a day, pack up every last soldier, close every single base and leave the defense of South Korea to the South Koreans. The South’s Army’s is one of the largest in the world, why should America continue to waste resources in this manner? Indeed, even if the north were to take advantage of the situation to make a move on the south, America should do nothing, abrogating all treaties and signaling to the world that the days of dependence on America are numbered.
