In this increasingly litigious society, one can always expect more and more outrageous claims. The case of Bob Dougherty of Boulder, Colorado is one such example. Mr. Dougherty is suing Home Depot. Apparently Dougherty went to use a public restroom at a Home Depot store in October 2003. When Dougherty was finished he found himself stuck to the seat. Apparently a practical joker had lined the seat with glue. What kind of idiot sits on a public restroom toilet with out looking? This man must be one of the filthiest humans on earth. Once the patron realized he was stuck, he called out for help, a store clerk heard his calls and radioed the message in to a superior. Apparently, store officials presumed Dougherty’s cries were a hoax, a logical conclusion, after all, how often do people get stuck to toilet seats? It’s probably not a regular occurrence at Colorado Home Depot stores. Eventually store officials called an ambulance who freed the man.

According to Dougherty he sat on the toilet for about 15 minutes before the clerks made the call. By Mr. Dougherty’s own account, Home Depot isn’t to blame for the incident but he does blame them for letting him “rot” on the toilet for 15 minutes. Presumably, there are those who will argue that this man’s grievances are legitimate. We, however, are not one of those people. In the first place this man should have looked before he leaped, clearly cleanliness is not a paramount concern to this individual if he considers a simple act like looking at a toilet seat too burdensome. In the second place, Home Depot was not responsible for his predicament and their reaction was perfectly reasonable given the outlandish situation. Perhaps Mr. Dougherty should be compensated for his time. The court should take his hourly salary and give him ¼ of that figure as compensation for the 15 minutes he spent glued to the toilet seat at Home depot. Perhaps if he is still unsatisfied, Mr. Dougherty can sue the glue manufacturer.
