Is the state of Israel months away from destruction? Is the US months away from coming under nuclear attack? Is Al Qaeda months away from gaining access to a nuclear weapon? These questions have become all the more legitimate in light of revelations from Mohammed El Baradei, head of the International Atomic Energy Commission (IAEA). El Baradei noted that if Iran succeeds in developing a uranium enriching facility, it would be a question of months before Iran was capable of producing atomic weapons. The Islamic state, therefore, could be only a few months away from the unthinkable. If Iran succeeds in developing such weaponry, the geo-political landscape in the Middle East, and the world will be forever altered. Iran’s hard-line president has already made his position on the issue of Israel abundantly clear, they are to be wiped off the map. But Iran will not stop with Israel, the temptation to export nuclear terror well beyond its borders will be far too compelling for the mullahs of Tehran to resist, after all, over the past 25 plus years Iran has made terrorism an arm of its foreign policy.

Iran continues to insist that its nuclear energy program is peaceful, this as it refuses to cooperate with inspectors or even accept compromise. The reality is, Iran has as much interest in peaceful nuclear energy development as Al Qaeda has in donating to the Anti-Defamation League. El Baradei has warned that all parties involved must tread carefully as a confrontation with Iran would undermine negotiations. Iran, however, is negotiating from a position of strength. The Europeans have already revealed themselves to be weak negotiators, having made concession after concession, to which Iran has responding with an abrupt “no thank you.” The premise that Iran is pursuing nuclear development for peaceful, low-cost energy production is laughable and preposterous. Iran has one of the world’s largest stockpiles of oil and natural gas, yet we are to believe that they are developing nuclear energy as a low cost alternative to fossil fuels. If this were a business plan, most investors would have long since bailed. Exactly how is investing billions upon billions of dollars to replace an energy source that is far cheaper to produce, a low cost alternative?

Iran is without question pursuing the development of nuclear weapons, which will (not may, will) lead to a major conflict between Israel and Iran. A conflict of nuclear proportions. Israel’s Ariel Sharon, has made it clear that his nation will react to Iran, if it becomes a nuclear power, a not sow veiled threat, given Israel’s history.
