A 6-Hour Funeral?

Yesterday, the family and friends of Coretta Scott King said goodbye to the widow of Martin Luther King, Jr. at an Atlanta area church. The funeral, which lasted an astonishing 6 hours, was attended by four US presidents, a host of civil rights and community leaders as well as ordinary citizens. The funeral for Mrs. King quickly turned political when former President Carter brought up the subject of illegal wiretapping.
As any reader of the Phalanx can attest, the NSA wiretapping scandal has struck a nerve and is most certainly illegal, without question and without equivocation. Nonetheless, Carter’s political rhetoric in the midst of a funeral was distinctly inappropriate. Carter reminded the audience that MLK’s phone conversations had once been tapped illegally. What Carter failed to point out was the fact that the illegal wiretaps were authorized by the Democratic administration of John F. Kennedy. Other speakers touched on the subject of WMDs in Iraq and issue which is far less clear cut than liberals would have us believe.
Of course it would be inappropriate for anyone to say, but then again that never stopped us before. What kind of person requests a funeral with horse drawn carriages, doves and the like? And exactly what type of funeral lasts for 6 hrs? Perhaps no other person in human history has had a 6-hour funeral. Not Gandhi, not King George VI, not Churchill, not Lincoln and certainly not Christ. Why then the widow of Martin Luther King? What ever happened to humility? This was no funeral but simply a leftist grand stand to bash common sense, conservatism and the Bush Administration in particular. Just when you think the left can’t sink any lower they do just that.
