Last week we brought you the latest tale in the ongoing saga that is hate monger Fred Phelps, “pastor” of the Westboro “church” in Kansas. Phelps is best known for his anti-gay diatribes and likening deaths in Iraq to God’s retribution for homosexuality in America. It seems however, that the Phalanx’s assessment of Phelps may not even begin to scratch the surface of America’s 21st century version of George Lincoln Rockwell.

According to syndicated columnist, Leonard Pitts, the secret to Phelps’ unabashed hatred of gays may lie in self-loathing. By Pitts’ reckoning, Phelps is simply the latest in a long of self-haters who conceal their secret by lashing out at others. In other words Phelps is gay. Such an argument may or may not prove valid, but previous studies have shown that those who exhibit a propensity toward homosexuality are the same individuals who champion restrictions on and persecution of gays.

Pitts sites as examples, individuals like hard-line anti-gay Spokane Mayor Jim West, who turned out to be...you guessed it…gay. This is not the first time we have heard such stories. These homophobes, misinterpret the constitution and even the scripture they profess to cherish in their ongoing battle against personal liberty and freedom in America. And in so doing they demonstrate their similarities with the mullahs of Tehran or the Taliban.
