Fritz Kuhn Winston McCuen, a South Carolina Latin teacher and slavery apologist has made it clear to anyone who will listen that America should make no apology for slavery. Blacks are inferior to Whites and slavery was entirely justified, McCuen argues. This “teacher” contends that history and IQ tests clearly prove that Whites are intellectually superior to Blacks. There simply is no reason to refute McCuen’s utterances, as nonsense requires no rebuttal, anymore than it would be necessary to rebut someone who argues that the Sun revolves around the Earth.
As any legitimate scientist can attest, there are no biological differences between the races. Intellect is not genetically predisposed, it is a byproduct of culture, experience and education…the premise that because of one’s skin color they are more or less inclined to be intelligent clearly demonstrates the stupidity of Mr. McCuen. Or should take McCuen at his word and thus assume that Blacks are inferior to Whites, Whites are inferior to Indians and Indians inferior to Chinese and Chinese inferior to Japanese, after all these cultures have a history of high academic achievement on similar assessments?
When questioned by a local reporter on the subject of slavery, McCuen’s response typified the average planter of the 19th century. McCuen argued that slavery was the Blackman’s rightful place in society and no apology was warranted.
"In America there was a rational assessment saying listen, if we give these people freedom right as they are and you have to go back to see how they were, you can't assume they were like us.” –Winston McCuen
At least McCuen can be credited with accepting the reality that the Confederacy was based purely on the principle of maintaining the institution of slavery, rather than the revisionist farce of “states rights.” McCuen’s position of slavery is equally erroneous. McCuen calls slavery a “positive good,” echoing the position of pro-slavery advocates who argued that slavery built the wealth of this nation and improved the lives of slaves, conclusion which flies in the face of logic or common sense. If anything, slavery was a drag on America’s economic progress, evident in the fact that the in 1860 the value of all goods produced in New York State alone eclipsed the value of all goods produced in the entire South?
Irrespective of the moral depravity of slavery, this institution ran contrary to the principles of free-market capitalism and smacked of socialism, not mention its inescapable divergence from republican ideals.
Sadly, McCuen is not alone; many buffoons in this country and throughout the world share such mindless opinions devoid of scientific fact, based purely on prejudice which only conceals a self loathing.
