Isn’t an abortion major surgery?

As anyone who has ever had a sick child in need of medical care can attest. Parents and guardians are frequently called upon to give their consent (except of course in cases of life threatening emergencies) before children undergo major medical procedures, such as any form of surgery.

Now I’m no anti-Abortion zealot, while being personally opposed to the practice, I also believe it should not be a duty of the state to impose prohibitions on personal liberty. Especially when those liberties do not infringe upon the rights of others.

By the same token, it is entirely appropriate for medical personal to obtain parental permission before performing procedures on minor children, why then is it so controversial when states impose laws requiring parental consent for abortion? Isn’t abortion major surgery? While there are certainly a few cases in which an abortion becomes a matter of life or death for the mother. In the vast majority of cases, however, this is not the case. So what makes abortion unique and why would those who would rise up in protest at the thought of a doctor performing certain procedures on a minor, why would these same people oppose parental consent on the topic of abortion?

Something certainly is foul in Denmark…
